June 17th marks a day of solemn remembrance and patriotic pride for the man who was a critical bulwark in the nation’s fight for independence. Born in Salta in 1785, Güemes rose to prominence as a military leader whose innovative and relentless guerrilla warfare tactics proved instrumental in defending Argentina’s northern frontier. His “Gaucho War” mobilized the rural populace, creating a formidable fighting force known as “Los Infernales” (The Infernal Ones) for their fierce and effective resistance against the royalist forces. With limited resources, Güemes’s strategic genius repeatedly repelled invasions, safeguarding the revolutionary process and enabling General José de San Martín’s legendary campaign to liberate Chile and Peru.
Tragically, on June 7, 1821, Güemes was ambushed in the city of Salta. He succumbed to his injuries ten days later, on June 17th, becoming the only Argentine general to be killed in action during the War of Independence.
